Poppo Lady Bug Cuckoo Clock With Music Box
According to noted Tezuka Company history :
Tezuka has been a general trading company for machinery and tools for over 100 years, but it also has a surprising past: it used to produce cuckoo clocks. Cuckoo clocks have a long history, dating back more than 200 years to the Black Forest region in southwestern Germany . The mechanism in which a bird pops out of a small window at the appointed time is well-known, but did you know that this bird is actually a "cuckoo," not a dove? Surprisingly, only in Japan are they called "dove clocks"; in other countries, they are called "cuckoo clocks." So why did they come to be called dove clocks? The reason lies in the peace aspirations of one woman.
The life story of a woman who created a cuckoo clock. The woman in question is Mihashi Kamen of Tezuka Shoten, the first company to manufacture cuckoo clocks in Japan. Kamen was born in 1890 (Meiji 23) in Kyobashi Minami Hatchobori, the eldest daughter of Mihashi Tetsusaburo and Waka, who ran a tool shop. At the age of eight, she lost her father to illness and moved with her mother from the house where she had shared memories of her father. Later, at the age of 17, she married Tezuka Rokuro, who was also a tool merchant like her father. In 1909 (Meiji 42), she established Tezuka Shoten, and their only son, Kyo, was born. The family's happy time seemed like it would last forever, but one day tragedy struck suddenly. In 1919 (Taisho 8), her husband Rokuro died of tuberculosis.
